The Watchmen - My Review

March 9th, 2009

So I went to go see The Watchmen movie this weekend and boy did I think it was average. My rating on it was a strong, steady C; this of course is on a scale of A - F. now before people tell me I suck or don’t know what I am talking about, lets put this into some context. I enjoyed watching the movie, however as far as problems go the complex plot points and complicated narratives left much to be desired. This however is not a product of the movie itself but a product of it being an adaptation for one medium to another. The graphic novel itself was a bore to read for me. Even though I finished I was left slightly more confused when than when I started and had to read through twice more before coherency began to set in. I found a similar feeling after viewing the movie, only knowing that after viewing 2 or 3 will I actually be more clear as to what happen. Multiple times during the viewing I was left dazed after one of Rorschach’s long-winded monologues (journal entries), not knowing what had actually happened.

Now you may ask, If the movie was this complicated how did it get a C. That can be answered in one word, Violence!!! Stylistically the violence was done superbly. It was a lot of it and it help with the tone of the movie. The entire movie in-fact was very polished looking (even though our IMAX theater version was up-scaled and it showed), this was a very good-looking movie. The grungy look of the movie in certain spots was very appropriate and it made for a very compelling looking movie. The soundtrack was great!!! It was a good choice of songs that really set the stage.

All in all it was very enjoyable. Having read the graphic novel series before viewing the movie probably help me from being completely befuddled, however I can see how a non-reader could be completely lost.
